Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The bankrupt boss of a Cumbrian haulage firm which collapsed with the loss of 30 jobs and debts of around Elm is being linked to a new firm.

John Goddard Haulage, based at the Kingstown industrial estate In Carlisle, ceased trading on 27 August, leaving a trail of debts and angry drivers who say their final pay cheques bounced.

Goddard is now working for newly formed firm Longtown-based LGH Logistics, but he insists he is not on the payroll and is lust helping out". However: it has emerged that the director of the new company is Goddard's wife, Louise.

According to Goddard, the company has been set up by owner-drivers anti hauliers who worked with his old firm. He says: "I'm just helping them get the business going. I know each of them personally and I don't want them to go the same way as me." Goddard maintains that his wife is a director in name only but concedes that there "might be some income for her in the long-term".

Bob Graham, who lost his job as administration manager when Goddard's firm crashed, says: "The drivers feel very angry and let down. Some are owed three weeks' money and, like me, many have mortgages and small children."

Goddard, who blames his bankruptcy on the rising cost of fuel and road tax, says: "I'm suffering more than anybody. I've lost my business and I'm going to lose my house anti my can" Goddard claims he tried everything to rescue the business and adds: "I genuinely didn't know the cheques would bounce. My wife was employed by the company and three of her cheques bounced."
