In. view ot the coal .eituation at the present time and the dependency of our industries for expansion on an incieased output, the figures given below, showing the output train the various coalfields for two separate weeks in the month of August will prove of interest:—

Some time ago we referred in our columns to the petrol bus services recently put into operation by the National Steam Car Co., Ltd., and we stated that further particulars would be given shortly. These we have now obtained.

From Chelmsford daily services are operated to Danbury and other places in the vicinity, and on market and certain ether tlay_e of the week to Maldon, Billericay, Leaden Roding and Braintree. Fourteen vehicles are in this service, comprising six double-deck omnibuses, one single-deck omnibus, and three charsa-banes, all of which are petrol driven; making up the 14 there arc four doubledeck steam omnibuses. In addition to these services, special trips are run to Southend, Clacton, Felixstowe, and other places of interest, whilst private hire vverk is fully catered for. On August 9th six petrol vehicles were put into service at Bedford, and at, the present time there are 11 there, 10 being double-deck omnibuses and one being a single-deck, which are run to towns and villages in the near vicinity. On Tuesdays only a service is run from Bedford to Hitehin market and Letchworth Garden Gay. The vehicles used on all these services, apart from the four steamers already referred to, are Dennis and A.E.C. These fleets will he added to as additional vehicles became available.

The enterprise of this company is developing the districts in which it operates to a remarkable extent,, and the iehabitants are enabled to visit markets which, otherwise, would be, to all intents and purposes, inaccessible.

Sales of War Stock.

The latest figures available of sales of surplus war material by the Disposals Board of the Ministry of Munitions show that £869,856 was secured for motor vehicles during the month of August.

Magneto Repairs.

The Runbakeu Magneto Co., Ltd., inform us that they have opened a showroom and repairs depot at 3, Camn Street, Deansgate, Manchester. A full stock of magne'eo spare parts for all makes of magnetos, together with other ignition accessories, will be held. Mr. J. Stephenson is in charge of the depot. The increasing demands made on the company by trade members have been responsible for the opening of the new depot.

Local Proceedings.

Middleton T.C.gequires a motor lorry. Rugby R.D.C. requires a motor lorry. Bognor U.D.C. requires two motor lorries at a cost of 21,090.

2750 is to be spent by Malvern U.D.C. on the purchase of a motorlorry. A steam wagon is to be purchased by the Mutford and Lothingland Bradford Corporation has authorized the purchase of a small motor lorry for general use. . The question of obtaining a steam lorry is under the consideration of the Llandudno U.D.C.

Sanction to borrow 22,657 for the purchase of two electric vehicles has been received by Preston T.C.

The National Steam Car td., have beught from the Southend Co.,dorporation three bus bodies at .2200 each.

Paigriton U.D.C. is applying for sanction to borrow 21,540, the estimated cost of a fire engine proposed to be purchased. Bristol Corporation proposes to purchase four 5-ton steam wagons, at a cost of about 2600 each, from the Government.

For the purchase of a motor pump and three motor combinations West Ham Corporation requires sanction to borrow 26,535.

Bradford Water Department requires a small motor lorry, and has recommended the corporation to purchase such a vehicle.

Dennis Bros., Ltd.' have successfully tendered to the St. Austell U.D.C. at 21,350 for the supply of a 45 h.p. turbine fire engine. Sanction to "borrow 21,240 has been granted the Chorley T.C. for the purpose of purchasing a motor fire engine. Application is now to be made for sanction to a loan of 22,426 required for the purchase of four motor wagons.
