The Portsmouth Corporation's experience with Karrier six-wheelers would certainly appear to have been satisfactory, f o r t his authority has recently taken delivery of six 60-seater double-deck buses in which six-wheeled chassis are employed. It is significant to note, that these vehicles are similar to eight previously supplied to this municipality which, it might be mentioned, now operates a fleet of 16 Karrier six wheelers, 14 being of the type which is illustrated and two 32-seater singledeckers.

In the latest type of double-deck vehicle the chassis incorporates in its tlesign a 60-80 h.p. engine of the sidevalve type, with a detachable head, a four-speed gearbox and worm-driven rear axles and its wheelbase is 17 ft. 6 ins. Power-operated brakes take effect on all four driving wheels which, as with the front wheels, are shod with 36-in. by 8-in, pneumatic tyres.

The bodywork of Portsmouth's latest double-deckers was carried out by the English Electric Co., Ltd., of Preston. It is of the covered-top pattern with vestibule entrance and the complete body weighs less than 2 tons 10 cwt. The upper saloon has seats for 32 people, whilst 28 passengers are accommodated • in the lower deck. All seats are upholstered in red leather and, with the exception of those over the wheelarches, are of the semi-bucket type. A wide platform is provided and this, in conjunction with low entrance step; facilitates the rapid entry and exit of passengers.

Special attention has been given to the question of ventilation on these vehicles and, bearing in mind that they are intended for regular-service work, the interiors have been finished so es to withstand hard usage. This type of vehicle is of the forward-control type and the driver is housed in a totally enclosed compartment which is constructed as a separate unit from the body proper.

The other six-wheeled Karrier bus shown on the previous page is a 40seater single-decker, built to the requirements of the Sheffield Corporation, which already operates double-deckers of this particular make. Of the doubleentrance type with both doors on the near side, the body, which is the product of Hall, Lewis and Co., Ltd., is divided into two compartments. The front saloon provides seating accommodation for 23 people and the rear section, which is primarily intended for smokers' use, seats 17 persons. The rear section is sufficiently spacious to provide standing room for other passengers during rush hours In this case, too, the seats, with the exception of those over the wheelarches, arc of the semi-bucket type and they are upholstered in a patterned moquette. Four of the windows on each side of the bus are made to lower, but should they be fully closed there is no fear of the interior becoming stuffy because five Airvac ventilators are fitted along the roof.

The interior fittings are in a measure, elaborate for a regular-service vehicle, but undoubtedly contribute to the corn 1342 fort of passengers. For instance, there are 11 nickel-plated parcel racks provided—one over each window—along with II opal roof lights, current for the latter being supplied by a 12-volt C.A.V. constant-voltage dynamo which is accessibly mounted and gear-driven from the near-side of the engine. Three leather roll-up blinds situated in the forward compartment protect the driver from the effects of interior glare and safe driving is further ensured by a powerful spotlight fitted on the near side of the vehicle.
