THE increased popularity of day 1 circular tours had resulted in an application for an extra vehicle allowance by C. Holt Ltd., it was stated at a two-day public inquiry at Manchester this week. Seven other operators, with similar applications pending, made representations in the case. For .the company, Mr. J. Backhouse stated that it specialized in longdistance day circular tours and it was possible for prospective customers to book their seats in advance. The company now wished to operate eight vehicles instead of six on 23 occasions, including Bank Holidays and Sundays.

A strong following had been built up over the years and now the company could not accommodate all its passengers. The restriction regarding the destination governed by Order No. 9 would be accepted. However, there was a tendency for operators to offer, these Order No. 9 destinations on one particular, day of the week, leaving the others to different occasions.

The seven other Manchester coach operators were represented by Mr. J. Booth. Mr. Backhouse said he understood that later the seven intended to ask for additional vehicles and had lodged, applications for additional excursions. If these organizations did not think there were enough vehicles in the area to meet the demand, on what grounds were they opposing Holt's applications?

"I am making representation for seven operators," said Mr. Booth. "But they do not wish to deny Holt its extra facilities, provided the company will share them with its competitors." It was a fallacy for Holt to try to cater for the passengers of other operators who were dissatisfied with short-distance tours and wanted longer ones. If the decision on the Holt application was announced before their applications were heard they would try to keep these in line with it.

The Chairman of the North Western Traffic Commissioners, Major-General A. F. J. Elmslie, reserved their decision.
