Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ASTRONG refutation has been made by Lord Hurcomb, chairman of the British Transport Commission, to charges by northern hauliers of harsh treatment.

The northern group of M.P,s met representatives of the Northern Area of the Road Haulage Association a few weeks ago, and the Members invited Lord Hurcomb to discuss permit modifications and revocations.

Mr. R. Ewart, M.P., secretary of the group, which is composed of Socialists, stated last week that Lord Hurcomb had said that the average number of permits revoked over the whole country was 40 per cent., whilst the average in the northern area was only 27 per cent.

Some 780 permits remained unchanged, about 80() had been modified and 570 revoked. Some of those revoked had never actually been used.

In respect to individual eases," Mr. Ewart stated, "Lord Hurcomb said the Commission had to implement the Act as passed by Parliament, but that full consideration was always given to representations on individual cases submitted either by the Association or by the permit-holder to the divisional manager of the Road Haulage Executive.

" After full consideration of the matter, the group decided to accept Lord Huncomb's statement, and felt that there exists adequate machinery at national level for the area Association to submit whatever matters require attention.

"The right of the individual still exists insofar as he could submit his grievance to his M.P " 0.P.P.A. GROWS IN YORKS
