AN INVESTIGATION INTO the use of longer semi-trailers (LST) has been launched by the Polish govemment.The approval of a largescale study for 300 extended trailers with a length of 14.92m will be facilitated by German manufacturer Kiigel, which has received 150 of the 300 issued permits for their supply The others have been issued to Polish trailer-maker \Melton. Poland's interest in USTs, extended by 1.3m, is matched by other European countries, which are also investigating their use.

A country-wide study in Germany has been running since 2006, the Czech government recently approved their use, Italy is testing 15mlong trailers and interest in the concept has been expressed in the Netherlands and Spain.

• The UK's Department for Transport (DIT) announced a six-month study into the use of LSTs in March. A DIT spokeswoman confirms that this research began in June, and includes discussing the trailer's potential impact with the industry.

She adds: "Although the number of businesses that the consultants are able to Ialk to directly will inevitably be limited, any business can indicate their willingness to participate by emailing freight@dft.gslgov.uk."
