£.50,000 Extensions : Kays (Derby), Ltd., last week opened a £50000 extension to their premises at Ashbourne Road, Derby. To mark the occasion they staged an exhibition of vehicles, including a large number of lorries.

Lower Rates: Firestone have reduced the tyre mileage rate of Hull Transport Department to 0.621d. per vehicle-mile. Dunlop have cut Barrow-in-Furness Transport Department's rate from 0.822d. to 0.810d., which will save £100 a year.

Publicity Campaign: The plan for a national publicity campaign will again be considered next Thursday by the public relations committee of the Road Haulage Association. although some details are unlikely to be settled until After the meeting.

" Giant " Sales Drop: Because of a persistently lower demand, both at home and overseas, sales of giant tyres fell below expectations, says Mr. C. M. Floyd, chairman of the Avon India Rubber Co., Ltd., in his report for the year ended September 27 last. The trend towards increasing competition in the rubber industry had continued. Road Signs: The British Standard concerning road traffic signs is being revised and enlarged, and will be published next month.

Goods Vehicles in S.A.: In the first nine months of last year, 13,512 new commercial vehicles were registered in the Union of South Africa.

Services Cut Instead: As an alternative to increasing fares to meet higher wages, Manchester City Council have approved a proposal by the transport committee to reduce the frequency of some bus services in off-peak hours.

New Homalloy Factory: Holmes (Preston), Ltd., have opened a London area factory at Rochford, Essex, where all Homalloy bodywork will be produced. The manager is Mr. S. C. Neve, formerly of Cornjoint, Ltd., and B.R.S. (Pickfords), Ltd.

Modern New Depot: Stewart and Ardern, Ltd., are to open a new commercial-vehicle depot at Wembley in the spring. Situated near their Cunard bodybuilding factory, Morris Commercial House" will occupy nearly 35,000 sq. ft. of, floor space, with upto-date facilities for vehicles from 5 cwt. to 10 tons payload.

Ambulance Operation: A paper on "The Operation and Maintenance of a County Ambulance Service" will be delivered on February 3 to the Southampton Centre of the Institute of Traffic Administration. It is by Mr_ E. Mallinson Hampshire county ambulance officer, and dic chief mechanical engineer, Mr. J. Bolton.

L.T.E. Officers Move: Mr. G. Fernyhough and Mr. W. 1. Kirshner, London Transport's operating manager and divisional engineer respectively for country buses and coaches, are now based at L.T.E. headquarters, 55 Broadway, Westminster. Mr. H. F.
