WHEN a customer witness told the 'WV Northern Licensing Authority, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, that his firm had reduced its rates, Mr. Hanlon commented: "I suppose you read the technical Press, such as it is, from time to time? "
He added that it WAS Well known in the industry that very large organizations, such as the R.H.A. and B.R.S,, had found conditions and costs reaching such a stage that they had been compelled to increase their rates by 7f per cent.
The witness, Mr. John Oswald, transport manager for Gibsons Readymixed Concrete, Ltd., said that rates were reduced, so far as he knew, about six months ago. He was called in support of an aPplication by F. C. V. Belgian, of Gateshead, an associated-firm, to transfer six tippers from contract A to B licence.
An objector, Mr. John T. Smiles, who said he operated 54 tipping vehicles, told the Authority: "Trade is so quiet in the haulage business that we are all at the worrying stage."
The application was refused.
FUEL TAX TALKS
THE prospects of reduced fuel tax will be discussed next Monday at a meeting between the National Road Transport Federation and the Economic Secretary to the Treasury.
FIAT-C1TROEN-SIMCA MERGER?
ACCORDING to Continental stack ex c h a nge reports, the French Michelin group, which holds a majority interest in the Citroen concern, has come to an agreement with the Fiat company of Turin. Italy, whereby Fiat would take over Citroen. The French Simca company is also reported to be involved.
The Michelin company, it is stated, would be granted a contract for supplying tyres to the new group.
