HSO wins bids

• Highland Scottish Omnibuses has been successful in a hid for licence authority for three new bus services despite objections from Highland Regional Council that they would result in a wasteful duplication of services.

Highland Scottish had applied to Scottish Traffic Commissioner Hugh McNamara for a circular service in Nairn, a service between the railway station and the primary school in Dingwall and a service between Castletown and High Ormlie.

Evidence was given that the council has accepted tenders for subsidised operations over the routes concerned from Dunnets Motors, Spa Motors and • Rapsons. They feared that the duplication of services would threaten the subsidised operators and disrupt the council's arrangements for the introduction of deregulation.

Granting the applications McNamara said the propogals would benefit the travelling public and he could see no reason for the objection. He noted with surprise that the council had awarded subsidised contracts to three independents knowning that Highland Scottish had applied to run on the routes concerned without grant aid.
