)EPARTMENT of Transport officials are stepping up checks m Greek coaches entering Britain in an effort to stamp out mlicensed express services between Athens and London.
The move follows sensation;eeking reports on two fatal road accidents on a licensed London 4thens service operated by the Euroways partners. In both :ases the Yugoslav police found he coach drivers not to blame.
At a weekend meeting Walace Arnold and its Euroways Partners decided that the official 4thens service would be split at Milan with British and French coaches operating from Victoria to Milan and Italian and Greek coaches operating from Milan to Athens.
This would give both the Partners and Department Pfficials better control over the pperation of the service.
From August 14, Greek :coaches operating un-licensed 5ervices were banned from entering Britain, but coaches
operating bona fide "'closed door" tours will not be involved.
During the last few years a number of Greek operators have been prosecuted for the operation of illegal services, but now stricter controls at the Greek end of the operation requiring drivers to sign a declaration that they are on a "closed door" operation should make illegal services much more difficult.
