Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A tag-axle 269kW (360hp) TurboStar tractive unit, and extra mixer chassis versions of the 'Maggie' eight-legger, are some of the latest additions to the Iveco Ford range introduced in time for the Birmingham Motor Show.

Until now the only three-axle TurboStar model sold in the UK has been the more powerful tag-axle 190.42. Iveco Ford, however, is now building tag-axle versions of the lowerpowered TurboStar 190.36 two-axle tractive unit, which will shortly go on sale in Britain, badged as the 260.36.

The tag-axle 260.36 Turbo Star is based on a shortened 3.2 metre wheelbase 190.36, but with a 1,348mm extension beyond the drive-axle incorporating the additional trailing axle. The 260.36 has a fully fuelled kerbweight of 8,030kg, compared with the 6,850kg kerbweight of the standard 3.48m wheelbase 4x2 190.36.

The factory-fitted 6.5-tonne capacity tag-axle operates in conjunction with the driveaxle's steel-leaf suspension via a rocking-beam transfer mechanism and is raised by an hydraulic ram.

According to Iveco Ford, the 260.36 is intended primarily for continental long-haul operations, being compatible with semi-trailers having 1.4 to 1.6 metre kingpin positions.

The tag-axle TurboStar 260.36 provides the missing link between the existing 190.36 two axle tractive unit, and the twin-steer 220.36 TEC tractive unit, with the smaller cab. Iveco Ford, however, says that for the moment there are no plans to produce a twinsteer TurboStar.

A 260.36 will be on display at the Birmingham Motor Show next month.

Iveco Ford has also introduced variants of the 'Maggie' 300.25 and 300.30 eightwheelers for concrete mixer applications.

The 12.8-litre Deutz veeeight air-cooled engine has been re-engineered to incorporate a rear-mounted power take-off, similar to that of the Cargo 2420 Deutz engined 6x4 concrete mixer chassis.

The direct drive to the mixer drum is said to be simpler, more robust, and lighter than alternative solutions.

To combat instability, due to the high centre of gravity of the mixer drum, 35mm anti-roll bars are provided for both steering axles.

Asymmetric hollow rubber helper springs can also be installed to compensate for uneven side-to-side axle loadings caused by rotation of the drum.

Commercial Motor will be reporting on other changes to the Iveco Ford range closer to the Motor Show.
