Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

the Colonial Exhibition, in Paris, of the use ef lighting gas as fuel for motor vehicles. Five machines took part in the trial, viz., a 20 h.p. 38-seater bus belonging to the big Paris motorbus company, two Panhard 2-ton 12 h.p. lorries belonging to the Paris gas company, and two Panhard 5-ton 19 h.p. tipping wagons belonging to the Paris municipality. All the engines were of the four-cylindered type, that of the bus having a bore and stroke of 110 mm. by 150 mm. and a compression ratio of 5.4 to 1. The bus engine was fitted with a governor which limited the speed to 1,300 r.p.m. The weight of the vehicle empty was about 6 tons 17 cwt., whilst the compressed gas was carried in 12 cylinders, each having a capacity of about 2,843 cubic ins., or a total of, roundly, 191 cubic ft., the total weight of the

cylinders being 19 cwt. 53 lb., which, of course, is considerable.

One of the gas company's lorries was equipped with six cylinders containing a total of 9,9 cubic ft. of corn

pressed gas, the combined weight of the cylinders being about '9 cwt., whilst the other carried eight similar cylinders, weighing altogether about 12 cwt. and containing about 13.24 cubic ft. The engines of both vehicles have a bore and stroke of 85 mm. by 140 mm. and a compression ratio of 7 to 1, the tare weight of each vehicle being 3 tons 91 cwt. Each of the two Paris municipal vehicles carried two 48-litre nickelchrome and two 80-litre steel cylinders containing a. total of about 9.1 cubic ft. and weighing altogether

fl cwt. The engines had a bore and stroke of 105 mm. by 140 mm. and a compression ratio of 6 to 1; the tare weight of each vehicle was about 6 tons 171 cwt. The above table summarizes the results of the tests.
