Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SHOCKING weather 'conditions militated against the complete success of the fifth annual motor parade organized by the Manchester Area Committee of the Commercial Motor Users Association, which was held on Saturday, September 5th. The judging took place in very uncomfortable circumstances, rain fallin., heavily at the time.

there was abundant scope for more competition, as will be evident from the fact that the whole of the entries were divided between six sections. Not a single passenger-carrying vehicle made its appearance.

The folkowing is a summary of the vehicles entered for the parade :- Steamers :—Fodens. 14; Sentinels, 3; Garrett, 2; Fowler, 4.

Petrol vehicles :—Leylands, 4; Karrier, 2; Thornycroft, 4; Vulcan, 1; Bell, 3; Austin, 1; Guy, 1; Albion, 4; and Dennis. 4.

The parade certainly deserved to have

been bettersupported than it was, and, considering how well the city is equipped with both heavy and light petrol motors, it was reasonable to have expected not only more haulage contractors, but also some of the leading city business houses to have participated. At one time the Manchester Corporation associated itself with the parade. Perhaps it will do so again in coming years. The two classes which did not command any entries at all were (1) passenger vehicles, and (2) nonmembers' vehicles.

Messrs. 3. T. Lawton and Co., Ltd., were again prominent in the prize list, and won two of the four silver challenge cups for having the best fleet of steam vehicles on parade.

The Manchester Parade Committee prides itself on having the most efficient system of awarding marks it is possible to devise. Bach of the judges awarded marks for only one section of the vehicle. For in stance, one judge examined the

radiators, another general cleanliness, a third condition of lamps, lamp brackets, etc., a fourth bodywork, and so on. Each vehicle was thus reported upon by the judges, and their awards, in marks, were entered upon the vehicle's report sheet. As every competing vehicle was known by number only, its anonymity was preserved until the moment of compiling' results. The following were the points taken into consideration in awarding the prizes :— AU vehicles.-1, General appearance having regard to neatness of presentation; 2, condition of lamps, lamp brackets, horn or gong and similar fittings; 2, condition of tailboard and wings; 4, condition of bodywork. Petrol vehicles only.-1., Condition of radiators and bonnets ; 2, general cleanliness of all parts under the bonnet ; 3, general cleanliness of all parts under ariver's footboard.

• Stearn • vehicles only.-1. General cleanliness and condition of engine; 2, condition of footboard, bunkers and tank ; 3, general cleanliness of smokehos, lagging and mud covers.
