Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

with a cocktail of additives, including viscosity improvers, friction modifiers, anti-wear compounds, detergents and corrosion inhibitors. Together, you get the sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur (SAPS) profile of the oil.

This does not have a direct influence on emissions, but a high SAPS profile is associated with a lack of performance and the longevity of the new SCR and EGR systems.

Technology developments

As developments in oil technology progress, synthetic oils are slowly replacing conventional mineral oils in the commercial market Lawn says: "There is a natural trend towards synthetic oils because they're more stable and durable. Manufacturers have, therefore, been able to extend drain cycles "Look at how trucks' service intervals have increased over the years and it's easy to see that there is a natural trend towards synthetics. Whether they'll replace mineral oils is another matter?'

Chevron, on the other hand, is sticking with mineralbased engine lubricants, with the company calling its latest Ursa Ultra product "an oil for Euro-5 and beyond... and one that performs as well as a synthetic — but at a mineral oil price".

Like its rival Chevron, Shell is also using more durable base oils instead of synthetics to improve engine performance Justine Clare, Shell Lubricants marketing manager for UK and Nordics, says: "Shell Rimula RT4L is fully approved by Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and MAN and operators of older equipment can also benefit as the lubricant provides superior wear protection compared with previous generation products Clare adds that Rimula RT4L helps prevent damaging deposits and sludge build-up.

She says: "Its wide range of OEM approval means it can be used as a single diesel engine solution for fleet operators that run a mixed fleet," Like Castrol, ExxonMobil markets a fully synthetic engine oil, called Mobil Delvac 5W-30

Tony Weather-ill. marketing manager at ExxonMobil, says: "The product has been designed to work seamlessly with modern low-emission engines, and meets the long oil drain requirements for the latest Mercedes-Benz and MAN trucks," •
