I F the Minister of Transport intro duces measures for the stabilization and control of road-haulage rates, railway rates for the carriage of goods should also be brought within the scope of the machinery, suggested Mr. Charles Holdsworth, chairman of the Yorkshire Conciliation Board, and of the transport section of Bradford Chamber of Trade, at a meeting of the section, on Tuesday.

It was vital, said Mr. Holdsworth, that there should not be a repetition in the haulage business of the pcsition on the passenger side of the road-transport industry, whereby, after road passenger fares had been fixed by the Traffic Commissioners, the railways ran excursion trains on competitive routes at much lower fares. In the meantime it was necessary that hauliers themselves should deal with the stabilization of rates, so that when the occasion arose, they would be able to put before the Minister -what they considered to be fair charges.

Mr. Holdsworth said the fatt that the Transport Advisory Council was considering the question of rates suggested that the Government had in mind the question of taking steps in this matter.

The need for the section inirnediately to take further steps on the question of rates in the Bradford district was emphasized at the meeting. It was decided to call a meeting of local hauliers on May 18, at the Chamber of Trade Rooms, Sunbridge Road, Bradford, to discuss local rates stabilization.
