GM still insists that it wants to buy I.and Rover as well as Leyland Trucks and that it might lose interest in the hirry division if it is not allowed to buy land Rover.

But Ministers accept that a straight sale of Land Rover to GM would he politically impossible and are looking for a (70111prornise package. One possibility may he a minority GM shareholding in Land Rover.

Despite all the fuss about Land Rover, which includes Freight Rover, there is little political protest facing the Government over the sale of Leyland Trucks to GM.

• Laird. which wants to buy Leyland Bus and merge it with Metro-Cammell Weymann. has surprised the industry by saying it wants to keep the Leyland Farington plant (which employs most workers and makes Tiger coach chassis and export buses) rather than the automated plant at Workington.

According to Laird chief executive John Gardiner, it has no use for either Workington or Eastern Coach Works at Lowestoft.
