A COMPREHENSIVE conversion scheme to enable trailers to be engthened and/or widened, or changed rom single axle to tandem, has been ntroduced by the York Trailer Co. Ltd. As well as platform trailers, nearly all lat-floor Freightmaster vans can be engthened and so can T.I.R. models. The York service also provides for conversion )1 rigid vehicles into tractive units.

Tax Deputation WHEN a joint deputation from the RI-LA. and T.R.T.A. met the Economic Secretary to the Treasury on Monday to make a pre-Budget plea for a reduction in the fuel tax, they raised the question of discrimination between road transport and the railways. They pointed out that B.R. paid no tax on oil used for its motor units, whereas commercial vehicles providing an essential service had to bear a heavy tax.

Goods Must Go Through

"WHATEVER may have to be done VV by means of tolls and restrictions to control private motoring in the metropolis, we must emphasize that the goods vehicle must go through unless the whole life of London is to come to a dead stop ", said Mr. F. Wheeler, area chairman, at the R.H.A. Metropolitan area annual dinner on Monday. New taxes and new restrictions on lorries would be a direct burden on trade and industry, he said.

Atlas Express Centenary A SERIES of receptions arranged in fa connection with this year's centenary of Atlas Express Ltd. was inaugurated in Liverpool on Monday when Mr. V. A. Neatherway, director and northern group manager, welcomed representatives of the cbmpany's customers, of local transport organizations and of neighbouring Atlas depots. During the year similar gatherings are to be held at Atlas depots throughout the country. A Liverpool staff party took place last Saturday.

The business was founded by William Taylor in Scotland in 1863 and soon extended to Liverpool and London. in recent years facilities have been provided for world-wide air freight and, through the Eurofreight Organization, for express parcels services throughout western Europe.

AFTER three years of development work on security bodywork, Dagenham Motors Ltd., Alperton, and its associated bodybuilders S.B. Bodies Ltd., Berkshire Road, London, E.9, have produced the van illustrated above. The vehicle, which was shown to the technical Press on Tuesday, must be as nearly impregnable as it is possible to make such a van. All known methods of gaining entry can be resisted. The body is built virtually as a box with all outside walls—side, front and rear, roof and floor—having reinforced-concrete cores and bullet-proof light-alloy exterior cladding.

All windows are of bullet-proof glass (concrete-filled flaps can be raised to cover those in the rear of the body as an extra defence) and the body is proof against a gas attack—all entries are sealed and air-conditioning plant is incorporated.

The amount of concrete used results in a body weight of 4 ton 5 cwt. and with the Thames Trader 7-5-ton chassis on which it is mounted the unladen weight is 7 ton 5 cwt. The payload is 2 ton 5 cwt. A feature of the design is that the body can be transferred readily to another chassis when the original one wears out— the body should have an unlimited life.
