Dorman Ricardo 4DS Units are Now Installed in Wolf and Vixen Models

I N addition to the range of petrol-engined chassis produced by Guy Motors, Ltd., Wolverhampton, the Wol t and Vixen models are now available with oil engines. The Wolf 2-tonner costs £448, whilst the larger-capacity vehicle—the Vixen, which is guaranteed to carry 3 tons —is priced at £495. Few alterations in the layout of the chassis have been found necessary, as the compression-ignition power-unit fits snugly into the space originally designed for the petrol engine.

The unit used is the Dorman-Ricardo 4DS four-cylindered model, having bore and stroke dimensions of 90 mm. and 120 mm. respectively, which give a piston-swept volume of 2.053 litres. The output characteristics appear to be ideally suited to the vehicles in which the engines are installed, for at 1,000 r.p.m. 22 b.h.p. is developed, at 2,00 r.p.m. the output is 44 b.h.p., whilst the maximum of 50 b.h.p. is available at 2,500 r.p.m.

It will be recalled that these chassis are made in wheelbase lengths of 10 ft. 6 ins. and 12 ft. 6 ins., with the s26 choice of forward control in

each type. As will be. seen from the accompanying illustrations, the off side of the engine is quite clear of auxiliaries, thus no difficulty has been experienced in incorporating the unit in the forward-control chassis. A filter is fitted to the air intake, an extended pipe running forward to enable the engine cowling to fit as closely as possible to the cylinder walls, thus providing the largest possible amount of space in the cab. On the near side of the unit are to be found the fuel pump, the oil filter, and the injectors, whilst the starter motor is housed in a special bracket which is mounted on the side of the crankcase and oil-sump casting.

Fuel is drawn from a 20-gallon tank carried on the off side of the chassis, and, after passing through a visible filter mounted on the A.C. diaphragmtype pump, it is forced through a second filler, of the fabric-element type, and thence to the C.A.V.-Bosch pump. All the unions, connections and controls are accessible, whilst the same applies to the valve gear and governor controls. Heater plugs are provided, a button switch being arranged in a handy position for the driver, with an indicator near by to show that sufficient heat for an immediate start bias been provided.
