Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Plans for the SED construction show, held at Rockingham in May, are gathering pace. We preview some of the highlights.

If you are in any way involved in the construction sector, then Rockingham Speedway, on the outskirts of Corby, is the place to be this May.

The giant SED construction show takes over the 300-acre showground for three days and you'll be able to see the latest kit on display and working on site.

Regular readers will be aware that Commercial Motor hosts the Truckzone at SED, an area where the commercial vehicle exhibitors gather to show off their new launches and latest developments. Already, stand space within the zone is filling up fast.

We recently reported on the new Renault Trucks Maxity 3.5-tonner (CM 1 February) and this will be one of the many all-new vehicles on display. The Maxity is a development of the Nissan Cabstar and is aimed at the building and utilities sectors, offering a compact vehicle for simple city driving. Also on the Renault stand expect to see the new Premium Lander tractor unit developed for on/off-highway mixed operations.

Of the heavy truck manufacturers, Scania and Hino have already booked their stand space. Scania will be exhibiting its wide range of construction trucks from its customary prominent stand position. Hino, one of the big market movers in 2006, will continue to roll out its range of trucks for the UK. In 2006 it commanded nearly 10% of the eight-wheeler market and it is hoping for an improved performance in 2007.

Establishing a presence

Avia has been keen to develop its presence in the UK and the company has had to battle hard to establish its range of medium-weight trucks. The Cummins-ZF-Albion driveline is well proven — it is identical to the Daf LF driveline— and the robust vehicle design is suited to the rigours of the construction sector.

At the lighter end, Isuzu Truck UK has made strides in product development and a new 15-tonner is expected to join the versatile range this year. At SED Isuzu will again be displaying its Grafter range of ready-bodied vehicles for the construction sector.

Vauxhall and Renault have confirmed their stand space, ensuring that vans will be well represented at SED. Both manufacturers have made engine changes to their products this year in order to ensure the vehicles comply with Euro-4 emissions regulations; users can expect a performance boost from the Movano and Master vans as a result.

In addition to the static exhibits in the Truckzone, you can also try a selection of 4x4s across a tough off-road driving route. Nissan and Mitsubishi have confirmed they will be bringing along their latest Navara and L200 4x4 pickups for trial— expect others to swell the ranks ahead of the event.

Equipment suppliers are always a major part of the Truckzone at SED and this year is no exception. The latest developments in truck-mounted cranes from Fassi and Cormach will be on display, while cement mixer specialist Hymix is booked to show off its extensive line-up of products for the sector.

Hope Technical Developments, manufacturer of the safe-T-bar reversing aid, is an SED show regular — as is Edstrom, the internal racking company. Both will be back in 2007, while two newcomers to SED are KnottAvonride, supplier of brakes, cables, coupling and jockey wheels for lightweight trailers, and Proteus Equipment, specialist in the supply of asphalt handling equipment. •
