Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

pASSENGER vehicle running costs are largely the same as those of the ordinary goods-carrying motor. The differences which occur are mainly due to more expensive body work, which involves higher first cost as well as increased maintenance charges. The question of insurance, too, is important to the rchar-a-banes and bus owner, and it involves i him in much greater outlay than s the case when only goods are being carried. The incidence of the new scheme of taxation will not press so hardly on the.char-h-bancs owner if, at the same time, he is relieved of the charge of anything up to 3d. per mile,. which has hitherto been levied by local authorities, county councils, and the like. At present, I gather, the situation is that every case has to be considered on its merits, the Ministry of Transport having constituted itself arbitrator. The following tables are

(in revised form) those which i appeared n our issue of November 30th last. Corrections have been madeto conform with the new licence charges and the decreased cost of petrol. I have made no allowance for the wages of a,conduetor, my principal reason for • this omission being that these articles are written mainly for the small operator, who, in the majority of cases, will arrange his services so that a-conductor is not necessary. In case a conductor is required, his wages must be added to the weekly standing charges in order to arrive at the correct estiraate of the running costs.

One of my correspondents, whom I will call " Profiteer," has carried out a round journey of 25 'miles with a "Ford" van, making six or seven deliveries along the trip, which occupied, altogether, 2, hours. His charge was 28s., which works out at a little less than is. 11d. a mile, and his client now disputes the amount. My opinion is that the charge is under rather. than over what ought to have been made. One shilling and six-pence a mile would have been fair in all the circumstances of the case, and my correspondent should press for payment in full.

I have read with interest two letters which have appeared in the Editor's page of "Opinions from Others ", over the signature of L. Brookrnan. Readers who have read his letters and read my articles throughout will appreciate that the difference between us is largely one of point of view. It is that which must always exist between a seller and a buyer
