Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Brian Weatherley 11 Seddon Atkinson is developing a light Cummins-powered Strato tractor with a kerbweight of under 5.3 tonnes for distribution companies and supermarkets looking for a dual-purpose 32/38-tonner.

A prototype tractor has already been built based on the conventional T6 Strato 38-tonner frame but with the narrower (2.1m wide) day cab used on Seddon's T5 Strato 17-tonne middleweight. By using the rigid cab the Oldham-based truck maker has saved weight and width against the 2.3m wide T6 cabin.

Production versions are expected to be officially launched in time for the Telford 1RTE Show in May.

Power is provided by the 8.3-litre C Series charge cooled Euro-1 diesel rated at 275hp (205kW). However, an uprated 300hp version of the C Series is being developed for Euro-2 legislation and Seddon has confirmed that it will be taking this engine (see tint box) for the light Strata.

With fifth wheel and full 300-litre fuel tank Seddon is quoting a kerbweight of 5,280kg for the day-cabbed 4x2 tractor, which has low profile 275/70 R22.5 tyres as standard.

Although the prototype is based on a 3.1m wheelbase, the final choice has yet to be decided.

The prototype is equipped with an Eaton FS8209 gearbox: production versions of the tractor will have ZF's nine-speed 95109 synchro box.

Parabolic springs are fitted all round; drive is provided by a Rockwell U160E back axle. The G1CN steering axle has an 8.0-tonne design rating.

The light Strato is designed to take on the Volvo FL7 and Leyland Daf 75-300 tractors. According to Seddon Atkinson's sales and marketing manager Ian Sumner, it will be ideal for daytime urban distribution at 32 tonnes and then fullload 38-tonne trunking work at night.
