Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Plaxton's commercial and marketing director John Tortis one of the casualties in the latest round of redundancies at the Scarborough-based coach and bus bodybuilder.

The company is axeing 33 white collar and 26 shop-floor jobs by the end of September, leaving a workforce of 700.

Torr joined Plaxton five years ago when it took over the Kirkby Kingsforth dealership. The company has refused to comment on his departure.

The cuts come as Plaxton is increasing its market share. However, managing director Neil Beresford says: "With no apparent sign of any end to the current recession and its impact on our industry, these measures, whilst regrettable, are prudent and necessary."

Earlier this year 44 workers were made redundant at Plaxton (CM 11-17 April), and about 150 jobs went at its sister company, Reeve Burgess.
