Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Applications by Halifax Corporation and Amalgamated Passenger Transport, for two new express services to the Palladium Bingo Flail in Elland, and the application by Hebble Motor Services Ltd. for eight additional excur sions to the same bingo hall were heard in Leeds on Wednesday by the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners. The Halifax application was objected to by Hebble and Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Co. Ltd. and the Hebble application was objected to by Halifax and J. H. Sheard Ltd.

The Commissioners decided to hear the Halifax application first.

If the Halifax application was not granted, said Mr. M. Lawrence, for Halifax, it was likely that the service at present being run on contract to the bingo hall management would have to be withdrawn. Existing services to Elland from Todmorden and Rastrick were inadequate.

Mr. F. Murray, from Halifax Corp., said that following an application on February 18 (CM February 28), he had been asked by the bingo management and the club members to make a further application. Mr. Murray said there was no evidence of the new service affecting Hebble's stage carriage to Elland.

Figures of the bingo hall services were available, said Mr. Murray, but he did not want to disclose them to the objectors.

Maj.-Gen. Sir John Potter, the chairman of the Commissioners, said they would require to know them because they had to be satis

fied that a fair rate was being paid. Mr. Lawrence said that this could not be divulged.

Mr. Murray was able, however, to give the revenue of the Todmorden contract and Rastrick services.

Answering Mr. P. Singrat, for Hebble and Yorkshire Woollen, Mr. Murray said n9 addi tional figures could be disclosed. Halifax had nothing to hide and was not undercutting. Mr. Singrat said there were three stage carriage

services from Hebden Bridge, all of which met a connection at Halifax and would arrive in Elland in time for the bingo, Mr. Murray agreed there' would be room on these services for the bingo passengers.

The chairman told Mr. Murray that the Commissioners had to be satisfied the con tract services were not being run at a loss. It was impossible to deduce this from the figures so far. Mr. Lawrence said he hoped. the figures would later become available. The hearing continues.
