Several resolutions concerning road transport are on the agenda of the annual conference of the National Chamber of Trade, which is to he held at Brighton from April 23 to April 28.

The Merthyr Tydfil Chamber of Trade has tabled the following resolution :—" That, in view of the national importance of road-transport vehicles using home-produced fuel, this Chamber considers that, to encourage the use of such vehicles, strong representations should be made to the Minister of Transport to exclude the weight of the producer for taxation and in assessing such vehicles for their permitted speed classification."

A resolution tabled by the Board of Management of the National Chamber states that, having regard to the complaints as to the refusal to grant or renew road hauliers' licences, " the Chamber requests the Minister of Transport to institute a special inquiry into the matter, with a view to determining on the facts whether any amendment of the legislation is called for to prevent the growth of monopoly, and to preserve reasonable competition between the different forms of transport and the availability of selecting those most suitable, according to requirements."

At the annual meeting of the Federation of British Industries, held last week, MR. PETER F. BENNETT, O.B.E., J.P., was elected President of the Federation, in succession to Lord

Hirst. Mr. Bennett is well known as chairman and managing director of Joseph Lucas, Ltd., and as a PastPresident of the S.M.M. and T. He has long taken a leading part* in the work of the Federation; in fact, during the past year he has been acting. as Deputy President. For many years lie has also been chairman of the Birmingham District Committee, and closely associated with the work of the Empire Committee, being present at the Ottawa Conference.
