Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TT IS not often that a company pro1duces a record vehicle and then' proceeds to beat its own record, but this is the case with the latest production of Scammell Lorries, Ltd., in the shape of what is said to be the largest tipping vehicle which has ever been constructed. This gargantuan lorry has been built for the Bournemouth Gas and Water Co. The body measures 24 ft. long, has an inside width of 7 It. and a side height of .4 ft. It has been built-for the pur pose of carrying coke, and will hold between 9 tons and 10 tons of this fuel, which can very easily be unloaded by the high angle of tip afforded by the powerful hydraulic gear. It is designed for end-tipping only, and the rear door ismade in two pieces, sWinging on vertical hinges. The capacity of the body is 30 cubic yds., and a particular !feature of it is the stiffening of the ton edge by off-setting the upper portions of the steel side panels, which greatly increases the strength so far as bends in the lateral direction are concerned.

The mechanical details of this new Scammell vehicle are identical with the standard 12-ton tipping wagon, -which we have previously described and illustrated, embodying, as it does, a special double trunnion mounting for the twin telescopic hydraulic rams of the Bromilow and Edwards gear, a safety cut-off valve for the pump and a special pressed nickel-steel carrier frame 13 ins, deep and with side-members which, in this instance, are no less than -icr in. thick.

The motive unit is the latest type n26

Scammell, with the, comparatively, new pressed-steel turntable, whilst the en gine has many features which increase its efficiency, these including aluminium alloy pistons-.

The stability of the machine has pr8ved excellent. It has been manceuvred in every conceivable way with a load in the body, and the latter elevated to almost its full height, and this without any unsteadiness allowing itself.

The turntable is, of course, provided with the special steel-rope snubbing links, -which prevent any tendency to excessive rock through driving and braking stresses.

The cab is well built, and protected by high side doors and a double windscreen with adjustable upper panels.
