Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Two firms had their licences suspended by the Scottish LA in Aberdeen on Thursday of last week. They were Polar Fish, fish merchant of South Esplanade West, Aberdeen, and potato exporter Nesco Potatoes Ltd, of Pitmedden Road, Dyce, Aberdeenshire.

A partner in Polar Fish admitted that the firm's only fish lorry had been 1 ton 4cwt overweight in May this year while transporting fish from Peterhead Market to Aberdeen.

Traffic examiner Mr James Bissett said his attention had been drawn to the lorry because the inner walls of the rear twin tyres rubbed together as the vehicle was being driven.

Said the LA, Mr W. J. Birnie: "I can't tolerate this and operators ought to have realized by now that Licensing Authorities throughout the country are getting more and more severe about this." He ordered the vehicle's licence to be suspended for five weeks.

Representatives of Nesco also admitted overloading a van, by I ton 17cwt in February this year. An agent for the firm said it was very export-minded and 85 per cent of its business went abroad.

Traffic examiner Mr Bissett said it was perfectly clear to him that the van was overloaded and the driver was having trouble steering the vehicle. It was found to be 53 per cent overloaded.

Mr Birnie declared: "This is an appalling overload." Suspending the firm's licence for two weeks, he added: "I must drive it home to you and other operators that you can't get away with it."
