DECISION was deferred at Leeds, on Friday, on an applicatiein by the Mexborough and Swinton Traction Co.,. Ltd., to the Yorkshire Licensing Authority to withdraw workers' fares on their motorbus and trolleybus services. It was also proposed to reduce by 1d. the 3ici. and 3d. fares into Rotherham to bring them into line with fares on other through services operating into the town.

Mr. S. D. Herrington, for the company, said the net increase was expected, to he £5,400. They had not applied for fare increases since 1952, but wages since then had risen by More than

13,000 a year.

A spokesman for Rawmarsh Urban• District Council, who objected, submitted that the company's profits were far greater than was shown. He suggested that their liquid assets were considerably greater than they needed to be.

Authorizing fare increases on three stage services to a Highley bus concern at Birmingham, the chairman of the West Midland Licensing Authority, Mr. W. P. James, commended it for tackling the problem of rising costs in the right way. The operators, Messrs. J. T. Whittle and San, had set an example to others in approaching local authorities

for their views before making the application, he said.

Newcastle upon Tyne Transport Department hay e applied to the Northern Authority for permission to introduce a new fares structure which would result in 42 per cent, of existing fares being increased. The application is to be heard on October 26.

The proposals are that ordinary fares should cost LW. up to 1.1 miles, with the addition of 1d. for each succeeding half-mile up to 3.1 miles and 1d. for each mile thereafter.

Workers' fares would be 11d, up to 2.1 miles. plus d. for each succeeding mile, with a ma xi m um of 41d. Children's fares would be charged at the rate of half the adult ordinary fare. fractions of 1d. counting as id.

The abolition of workers' fares is prop osed by Wallasey Transport Department and a joint operator (Crosvide Motor Services, Ltd.). They have also applied to the North Western Licensing Authority for permission to add 1d. to the present 21d., and 3-41. rates, and Id. to the 3d. and 4d.-10d.

Grimsby Transport Committee have been told that if a further wage increase is granted to employees of the transport department. a further rise in fares may have to he considered.
