Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CONSIDERABLE activity prevails in the works of the Harrow Industrial Co., Ltd., Green Lane Works, Stanley Road, South Harrow, and many interesting trailers are being turned out, including a new 10-12-ton model. This has been designed for use in connection with a Beardmore tractor, which make was formerly known as the ChenardWalcker.

Just above the turntable, each longitudinal chassis member is made up of two channel-steel sections welded side by side. This arrangement gives great strength at a point at which it is much needed, whilst, at the same time, it minimizes the depth of the chassis, thus providing ample space for the setting out of the forecarriage and front springs.

Behind the turntable the doublechannel sections are welded one below the other, and The springs are connected to brackets fixed to this lower member. In this way the height from the ground of both front and rear springs can be made the same. The chassis is braced by sturdy cross-members A particular feature of this new trailer is the ample braking power available, the • Ferodo-faced shoes being 24 ins, in diameter and 6 ins. wide. They are carried in drums on the rear wheels. Owing to the desirability of having wide brake drums as well as the minimum distance between the road springs and the wheels, it was found necessary partially to house the drums within the width of the steel-spoked wheels.

As in other Harrow products, the brake torque is not taken through the axles, but passes direct to the road springs, through the medium of the spring brackets. The brake drums are bolted on to the periphery of the wheels, and in this way torque from the drums is prevented from passing to the spokes, thereby minimizing the risk of their becoming fractured.

The brake levers and COMB are, as regards each set, made in one piece, and are mounted on roller bearings in order to secure free action and to require the least amount of attention. Braking effort is supplied by hand control and by the Westinghouse pressure system, each method of operation being bidependent of the other.

An attractive feature of Harrow trailers is that most of the parts are interchangeable, so that a fleet manager need not keep in stock a large variety of different parts. Considerable strength is given to the trailers by reason of the fact that the joints are welded.

As the appliance is for use in connection with a Beardmore tractor, the trailer has, of course, a swan-neck drawbar. Superimposition of a'portion of the trailer weight upon the tractor is employed in order to increase drivingwheel adhesion.
