Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is stepping up its campaign to control spiralling workplace accidents in haulage by increasing its inspections of depots and operators' yards.

The haulage industry has an accident rate three times the national average—and rates have rocketed by a whopping 40% over the past four years with about 100 fatalities a year.

HSE Inspectors visiting hauliers over the next three years will seek answers to how bosses manage the risks in and around their premises.

The HSE's Jerry Mawood says it aims to spread information on correct practices in the workplace; he wants hauliers' help in putting together a 'good practice' website.

"People involved with deliveries must co-operate with each other," he adds. The HSE feels this is a neglected area— it's often a free for all and left to the driver-to make it up."

Targets have now been set for reducing workplace transport fatalities and injuries; the HSE hopes to have red them by 5% in the next years 2004 and by 10% by Mawood adds: "At thE of the day if Organise choose not to control

properlht inspectors enforce, serve notices prosecute where we CE push comes to shove, wi take a hard line."
