• The Ax-Way load-sensing device which utilizes strain gauges to convert spring deflection into weight readings electrically is shown fitted to a vehicle exhibited at the Scottish Show. The device, first reported in CM May 2, is mounted on an Atkinson tractive unit and there have been certain modifications since it was introduced.
!nstead of having individual strain gauges mounted on the vehicle springs, a separate load-sensing arm is arranged to bear on the rear axle casing. Deflection of this arm is picked up by a gauge mounted in a spring steel strip portion of the arm. Signals passed from the gauge are fed into a transistorized cabinet (located in the Atkinson cab) which converts
the signals and displays them on a meter as a direct reading in tons. The Ax-Way is made by BD and TD Ltd., Bowtech House, Dinting Vale. Glossop, Derbyshire.
