Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DEJECTING a haulier's application for a new B licence, Mr. S. W. Nelson, Western Licensing Authority, said last week that he did so "somewhat regretfully." Mr. Henry James Sweet, Briseham Close, Exmouth, had asked for a tipper to carry general goods within a 30-mile radius.

Mr. Sweet called eight witnesses during the three-hour hearing, including local builders. a Brixham furnisher and the rnanager,of a caravan park at Paignton. He said he already had a vehicle on contract to the Berry Head Lime and Stone Co., and their associated companies, but he had had many requests from other concerns to undertake haulage,

From 1946 to 1954 he had worked for Mr. J. T. Mills, a Brixham haulier, but when Mr. Mills died he could not afford to buy the business, Instead, the goodwill was bought by one of the objectors, Mr. W. R. Dart.

Three builders claimed that there ought to be a wider choice of facilities in the town. One of them, Mr. G. Freeman, pointed out that an owner-driver would be discriminating when making collections at brickworks and would refuse poor bricks.

Mr. Dart replied that he often had vehicles standing idle. At present he operated five on B licence and one on contract A to Berry Head Lime and Stone, and there had been few complaints from customers. The other objectors were W. L. Valiance, Ltd., and British Road Services, who claimed that they could meet all existing demands. They refused to withdraw when a smaller' radius was suggested.

Mr. Nelson said be could find no evidence of a lack of haulage facilities in Brixham.

HORSEBOX HAULIER MUST PRODUCE FIGURES AT. the request of British Railways, . Maj. F. S. Eastwood, Yorkshire Licensing Authority, last week adjourned a part-heard application at Bridlington bY Mr. F. Turnbull, Wrelton, Pickering, Who wanted to carry "horses as required" on a B licence at present restricted to 50 miles.

Mr.. Turnbull said in evidence that he had been asked to carry polo ponies to tournaments in various parts of the -country, and was also required to carry jumpers to the major agricultural shows. Answering Mr. T. B. Atkinson, for British .Railways, he agreed that he had carried race-horses on A licence, but said his extra work could not be absorbed_

After hearing two witnesses who said they needed additional facilities, Mr. Atkinson suggested an adjournment for figures to be produced.

MINISTRY VISITOR TRAINING methods used by London I Transport were studied last week by Mr. G. R, H. Nugent, Joint Parliamentary Secretary to. the Ministry of Transporz, when he visited the L.T.E.'s Chiswick training centre.
