issued' to check and control the -use of, petrol through the car-hire system, whether self-drive or not, for purposes not connected with the war effort or essential business. It is the Motor Fuel (Hire Service) Order, 1941, S.R. and 0. No. 1745, and will come into force on November 24.
Any hirer of a self-drive car for use within a ra.clids of 20 miles of a garage in a London area and 15 miles' elsewhere, must give a signed declaration to the proprietor binding himself to such radii. Above these, but within 150 miles, it may be hired for journeyi only on business, for professional purposes or urgent domestic reasons, and then' only if other means for transport be not reasonably practicable. The hirer must give the proprietor a signed declaration as to the purpose and extent of the journey., There must be no hire beyond a radius of 150 miles, except for service duty or for essential., purposes under Regulation 100 of the Defence Regulations, i.e., for the defence of the reale', the prosecution of the war and the life of the community. Again, a signed
declaration is needed. Garage proprietors must keep detailed records. •
