LAW-BREAKING hauliers who have previously bent the rules outside normal hours or at night can expect 24-hour enforcement from VOSA, according to the agency's latest statement.

In a response to CM following the feature 'Enforcing the law', (CM 9 April), VOSA says it is moving away from 9-to-5 operations and addressing the way drivers pay roadside fines.

A VOSA spokeswoman says: "Since 2008,VOSA has been operating a 24/7 capability, allowing it to make a sustained and concerted effort to target and deal with highrisk traffic.

This will send out a clear message to drivers: whenever and wherever they are on the road network, they'll be dealt with if they are non-compliant."

In reference to the payment of fixed penalties for breaches of overloading, construction and tacho regulations, the spokes

woman adds: "The preferable method of receiving payment will be by card or guaranteed UK cheque. During office hours, a driver, or any other person acting on their behalf, will be able to pay by card by telephoning the back office with their card details.

"We are looking into how card deposits can be paid out of hours, "However, on occasion, the driver will wish to, or only be able to, pay in cash.

"In these instances, we will accept payments in pounds or, exceptionally, euros."
