Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

OPERATORS using 38-tonne lorries in the London Borough of Ealing are still prohibited from using the Canal Bridge section of the A40 Western Avenue.

Although the bridge is now fit for such vehicles following recent reconstruction work (CM, May 7), all vehicles over 32.5 tonnes are still banned from using the bridge — a ban that will continue until Ealing Borough Council removes its weight restriction signs. The council cannot do that until it receives a letter from the Department of Transport officially instructing it to do so.

As CM went to press earlier this week, the chief engineer's department at Ealing had received no such letter and therefore, according to a council spokesman, the unnecessary ban remains in force for the forseeable future.
