Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

During a visit to Lincoln last week, a member of the Editorial staff of "Toe COMMERCIAL MOTOR " had an opportunity of examining several tractors which were being erected in the Wellington Works of Wm. Foster and Company, Limited, of Firth Road. Mr. W, 0. Tritton, the general manager of the company, who received our representative, pointed

out more than one interesting departure from the previous practice of this maker, and amongst these the very neat and practical cylinder lubricator is, perhaps,. the most important. This device consists of a plunger pump, which is driven, through a connecting rod and ratchet wheel from one

of the eccentric straps. The small crankshaft, by which the pump plunger is actuated, is provided at one end with a small hand wheel, and by this the pump can be caused to deliver oil to the cylinders when the engine is stationary. The pump barrel, plunger, and the ratchet-driven crankshaft are completely enclosed in an oil-tight casing, so. that all leakage of oil past the pump plunger is collected in the sump of the case, and is again -used in the pump. The valves are accessible from the outside of the casing, and are easily removed, for cleaning or regrinding, when necessary.

This company has, for some time, made the pinion shafts of its tractors with four solid keys, but hard work has shown that there was not sufficient

area presented to the crushing action on the sides of the keys; this has led the company to modify its designs to the extent of making the shaft with eight keys, and the sliding pinions are provided with the same number of key

ways. The keys are cut out of the solid metal of the crankshaft.

The gear-driven water pump on this make of tractor is a capital example of economical design. The bracket by which the pump is bolted on to the horn plates, the tray which catches all the leaking water, which is returned to the tanks, the facing which takes the regulating valve and the guides for the plunger cross-head, are all cast integral with the body of the pump, and the resulting arrangement is cheap, compact, and effective.

The identification sheet, which we reproduce at the foot of this page, shows onc of the very useful sheets which are supplied, one with each machine that leaves the company's works to all buyers. The sketches at the left of the sheet enable the user to recognise any part which he may desire to have replaced, and the number which is appended to the particular sketch enables him to refer to the tables, from which he can obtain other information which will guide him in the ordering . of spares. The full size of the sheet is 38 inches.by 28 inches.
