Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

w West Yorkshire Hazchem specialist Pennine Tankers is closing its Castleford-based tanker operation to focus on its sister firm, chemical haulier Kenneth Howley Transport.

Gordon Brundell, finance director at both Pennine and Howley, says: "The company made its decision because the tanker operations proved to be economically difficult as they relied on spot haulage and had no fixed contracts. We will now focus all our resources on smaller work at Kenneth Howley."

Six of Pennine's drivers have been laid off with the remainder transferred to Howley.

The fleet of 11 Daf tractors and 28 tank trailers will be sold at the company's site on 23 March by Commercial Vehicle Auctions.

• Suffolk grain haulier WFJ Euston is also shutting up shop, after 52 years. On 16 March the entire fleet will be sold off to allow MD John Euston to take early retirement. "Business hasn't been that bad but to make any headway I need to go to 44 tonnes," he explains. "At 58 years old I am not prepared to put money into things like that. You never know what is going to happen tomorrow so I am giving up now to enjoy full living before lam too old to go to Tenerife!"

The company's tractors and equipment will be sold at its base premises on 16 March by auctioneers Lacy Scott and Knight.
