• Metropolitan Licensing Authority Ronald Ashford is to take over as overseer of the revamped licensing authority system, the Department of Transport has confirmed.
He will succeed John Carpenter as senior traffic commissioner and will also take over as Licensing Authority for the Western area, based in Bristol; Carpenter retires later this year. Ashford, who is known for his tough views on overloading and impounding unlicensed trucks, was tipped for the senior post when it was announced last year that his Metropolitan area would disappear.
