A REDUCTION in prohibitions of ri vehicles from the roads because of. mechanical•defects could be attributed to the .West Midlands Maintenance Advisory Committee, Mr. W. P. James, West Midland Licensing Authority, said last week.

Mr. .f. C. H. Aston, of Joseph Lucas, Ltd., has relinquished the chairmanship of the committee and has been succeeded by Mr. C. Collins, chairman of the West Midland Area of the Road Haulage Association, who was formerly the committee's vice-chairman. Mr. S. W. Mack, Birmingham district manager of British Road Services, is the new vice-chairman.

Mr. L. Patrick, of the Traders' Road Transport Association, continues as .secretary of the -committee.

• . HAULIERS HARD WORKED IN WILTSHIRE

WILTSHIRE was becoming a VV" tuberculin-tested county," and large numbers of cattle were being imported, Mr. S. W. Nelson, Western Licensing Authority, heard last week. Mr. Edward -Bodman, an auctioneer, explained that farmers were going long distances to increase their livestock, and hauliers were under pressure because two or three markets were 'often held on the sanie day.

He was supporting an application by R. Webb and Sons, New Leaze, BrinkWorth, Wilts, to add a vehicle to their

B licence. They, produced figures showing that last year their A licence vehicles carried only livestock.

'The application was granted for agricultural implements and machinery froth auction sales and livestock within 200 miles, furniture for farm employees and agricultural products and requisites, except to and from Avonmouth, within 40 miles.

END OF ROUTE MONOPOLIES

MONOPOLIES' on lorry route licences are to be broken by the Ceylon Government in an effort to bring down rates and so cut food prices. The -Minister of Transport will shortly submit to the Government an amendment to the Road Traffic Act, ending the present system of route licences.

He has ordered that 'no .fresh permits -shall be issued until the amendment has

been considered, and has agreed to allow • . • .existing licences to continue in force until then.

.REPORT BEING STUDIED THE Minister of Transport told Mr. 1 Rupert Speir (Cons., Hexham), on Monday, that he was carefully studying the report on rural transport in Northumberland (summarized in The Commercial Motor last week).
