Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

•connect Matlock, • B.akewell, Buxton and Knutsford with the North Wales coast. the North Western Road Car Co., Ltd., were said last week to have had only one coach on the service since 1956. Mr. F. D. Walker, for the company, said this vehicle had operated commercially full in last year's holiday season, and on many occasions bookings had been closed, with passengers diverted to Manchester or elsewhere.

British Railways objected, although Mr. Walker pointed out that there was no direct rail service.

He said that although the primary licence was granted in 1956, the backing of the West Midland area was not approved until April, 1957, and the service was put into operation at Whitsuntide. Licensed timings were for Saturdays only between the first Saturday before Whitson and the last Saturday in September.

The early-season figures were low, because the company were unable to advertise until April and the service was not generally known at that time.

Mr. W. Woolley, assistant traffic manager, said an increase would have been sought earlier but for the bus-strike. Applications for a dispensation in 1957 were refus'ed because of objections by 'British Railways.

Mr. T. B. Atkinson, for the objectors, said they would not call evidence as it would be the same as at the original hearing. From the figures, the North Western Traffic Commissioners should not be satisfied that an additional vehicle was required for the full period. Loadings for June and September were comparatively small, and a grant should be made only for July and August.

The chairman, Mr. F. Williamson, said the Commissioners saw no danger in a full grant. So long as there was tight control the objectors could not be harmed, and the position could be reviewed when the licence came up for renewal in 1959.
