Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

UNDER ordinary conditions, servicemen entering for Lorry Driver of the Year contests suffer through having to handle military vehicles which are often much less tractable than their civilian counterparts. This situation, however, did not seem unduly to handicap the efforts of S.A.C. D. McPherson (Austin), R.A.F. Leeming, who last Sunday became overall winner of the York round. He was third services finisher in the 1962 national final, having won the services section of the eliminating round .last year also.

At York the class winners entered a

final series of tests using a pair of identical Commer four-wheelers. This run-off was won by McPherson with 136 penalty points, his closest challengers being W. Smeaton (Kenneth Wilson Ltd.), Foden, from Class E2, and J. Hudson (J. H. Tait Transport (York) Ltd.), Commer, from Fl, who tied with 143. Lowest penalty of the day, 81 marks, fell to J. Flower (Concrete Services Ltd.), Thames, who as last year, was winner of Class B. Next came T. H.

• Bibby (J. C. Sanders and Sons), Bedford, 88, who was repeating his 1962 win in Class D. Concrete Services Ltd. had a return success in the team section; 1. Cawthorne, A. Vickers and D. Dobson, all Thames, totalled 383. This gave them a bare two marks advantage over Schweppes (Home) Ltd. whose team comprised L. Sheridan, F. Kirkham and R. Stott, all Bedford.

There were seven entries for York's local speciality, Class Z, which is open to commercial vehicles too small to be acceptable for the national competition. This section was won by B. Hill (Universal Tyre Co.), Thames. The youngest competitor of the day, 17-yearold Malcolm Bartram (J. E. Bartram), Dodge, making his first appearance in any competition of this kind, secured second place in Class C, being eight marks behind the winner R. Jones (F. Shepherd and Son), Bedford, 119.

The Road Haulage Association's York sub-area plays a prominent part in the organization here, which is perhaps the reason why hauliers' vehicles form a substantial proportion of the entries. By the same token laden vehicles are more common than usual despite the fact that this is certainly no help in the test. More difficulties than are customary seemed to arise on kerb parking and quite a number of drivers were severely penalized through exceeding the permitted number of moves. Some quite surprising errors arose on width judging, the tendency here being to err on the generous side.

Once again the location of the event was the Rufforth Air Station, which is a good centre and provides ample space for the test. The road circuit was well planned, including a Stop and re-start, also a somewhat deceptive junction among the various check-points.

On the practical side the York contest is well organized but for many of those present last Sunday the interest was lessened by the fact that tbe printed programme did not contain any details of the competitors taking part and the entry list with which it should have been supplemented unfortunately failed to

appear. A.T.
