Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

For many years I was opposed to car radio because I thought it encouraged thieves and was a distraction. I am now reconciled to it but seldom remember to use it and never tune-in while am driving. Perhaps I am missing useful traffic information but I prefer that to an accident caused by fiddling with radio controls.

Dr Ivan Brown, assistant director of the Medical Research Council Applied Psychology Unit at Cambridge, also has slight reservations about vehicle radio. Quoted in Care on the Road, he said that road safety could be impaired by listening to programmes that required mental effort by the driver.

On the other hand, he approves of light entertainment, particularly for professional drivers, as relief from boredom and fatigue.

What is to be condemned out of hand while driving is the wearing of stereo headphones that obliterate traffic noises.
