£40,000 LOSS ON BRADFORD SERVICES.

TIRE was a not loss of 141,221 on the working of Bradford Corporation's tramway department (which comprises trams, trolley-buses and motorbuses), during the year ended March 31 last, as against a loss of 150,866 for the previous 12 months. On the trains there was a loss of £21,258 (a decrease of £9,378 on the deficit of the previous year). The loss on the trolley-buses was £11,950 (decrease, £1,148)—and the deficit on the motorbuses, £7,997 (increase, £650).

The parcels section made a profit of B38 £254 (decrease, £231). The vehicles

travelled 10,810,381 miles (476,231 fewer than in the previous year), whilst the total of 107,449,992 passengers showed a drop of 6,025,624, tram passengers, being nearly 5,000,000 fewer than in 1931-32.

The gross income of the department for the year was £714,643, and the working expenses amounted to £615,434, leaving a gross profit of £99,209. The net-revenue charges were £140,430, leaving a deficit of £41,221 In March last, Bradford's fleet numbered 146 tnotorbuses and trolley-buses of a variety of makes. OPERATING RESULTS OF SHEFFIELD'S BIG FLEET. ONE of the largest municipal users of buses is Sheffield Corporation, which. at the end of March last, was operating 186 vehicles of this type. During the past year these vehicles were operated at a gross profit of £31,497, total income having amounted to £218,358 and working expenses to £186,861. Set against the gross profit are interest and repayment charges, amounting to £5,512, so that the balance is £25,985. Of this total £25,876 is passed to the renewals and interest funds, so that the net surplus for the year was £109. WALSALL'S GOOD RETURNS.

THE munieipal passenger-transport system at Walsall includes both petrol buses and trolley-buses, and in the year ended March 31, 1933, the former were operated at a gross profit of £39,466, whereas on the latter the gross profit was 15,250. After meeting interest, redemption of debt, income tax and other charges, the net balance on the petrol buses amounted to 19,170, the sum for trolley-buses being 12,822.

The petrol buses operate over a route mileage of 185 arid during the past year the vehicles covered an aggregate mileage of 3,227,194 and carried 20,228,994 passengers. At the end of March last the corporation owned 97 petrol buses, mostly of Dennis make.

The trolley-buses, of which only four were in use at the end of March, 1933, serve six miles of route, sad during the past year covered a total net mileage of 211,281 and carried 1,486,657 passengers.

For the petrol buses the revenue account showed that income totalled £164,707, whilst working expenses amounted to £125,241, the comparable figures for trolley-buses being £12,212 and £6,962 respectively. At the end of March last the net capital expenditure on the petrol-bus system amounted to £217,628, the figure for the trolleybus system being 133,359.

Walsall has operated petrol buses for 18 years, but its trolley-bus experience is limited to two years. TRAMS LOSE: BUSES GAIN.

DESPITE a profit of £6,626 onthe

bus system, Coventry Corporation's transport department last year worked at a loss of £13,311. This is accounted for by a deficit on the tramways of £12,937, which was the result of heavy payments on loans. Actually, the tram. ways system made a gross profit of £17,319.

The buses carried 15,359,243 passengers last year, as compared with 13,569,124 a year earlier, and the total. for the entire transport undertaking increased by 205,183. The bus mileage increased from 1,815,994 to 2,013,024; the working cost per bus-mile was 12.03d., as compared with 12.84d. for the trams. Last year the loss on the tramways amounted to £13,629 and the profit on the buses to £8,029.

In March last Coventry Corporation owned 62 buses, consisting of 52 Maudslays, five Dennis vehicles, four of A.E.C. make and a Daimler.
