MERCEDES-BENZ has released the first images and outline specifications of its new Euro-6 Atego, due to go on sale in May. This completes Mercedes' top-to-bottom revision of its entire truck range for Euro-6.

The artist's impression of the cab shows how the Atego will fall into line with the family styling of the new Actros, Antos and Arocs. It will be available at weights from 6.5-tonne to 16-tonne GVVV with seven new Euro-6 engines from the 0M934 and 0M936 series, all providing more power and torque than the smaller 900 series engines in the outgoing model.

All engines will use a diesel particulate filter and diesel oxidation catalyst to cut particulates, and EGR and SCR to reduce NOx emissions.

The four-cylinder 0M934 series BlueTec 6 engine will be available with four power outputs of 154hp, 174hp, 208hp, 228hp from a 5.1-litre displacement, with peak torque values ranging from 650Nm to 900Nm, generated between 1,200rpm and 1,600rpm.

Three of the five new sixcylinder 0M936 engine's ratings also feature in the new Atego range, offering power outputs of 235hp, 268hp and 295hp. Specifying the 7.7-litre 0M936 engine adds about 150kg to the Atego's kerb weight.

These new higher-torque engines are said to consume up to 5% less fuel, and some will also benefit from longer maintenance intervals. Automated and manual transmissions will be available, with sixor eight-speed autos and sixor nine-speed manuals. Braking will be carried out by disc brakes on all axles, with a two-stage engine brake and the option of a permanent magnet retarder to reduce pad wear.

The Atego will make its public debut at the CV Show in Birmingham in April.
