The Manchester Show, which is now open at Belle Niue Gardens, demands a visit from those of our readers who are within access of Cottonopolis. It is one of the most representative provincial exhibitions, and promises, owing to the fact that Manchester is such a splendid centre, to take a strong lead in the future.

The Automobile Mutual Protection Association, whose office is at too, Victoria Street, S.W., intimates that it has, after protracted search, discovered a patent, dating back to the year toot, which fully anticipates all later patents claiming the use of a continuous-web casting, which extends from the engine base-chamber to the vehicle's frame.

The accompanying illustration is of a Thorny croft, self-propelled, fire-brigade tender, which has been built for the borough of West Bromwich; it has a 4-cylinder, 24h.p. engine, and is adapted to carry a total load of 2 tons. Its body has been designed, specially, in accordance with the requirements of the West Bromwich fire brigade. It can attain a speed of about 20 miles an hour, and the various fire appliances are disposed for rapid handling. The bonnet is of polished brass.

The new South Polar expedition, in the charge of Mr. E. IL Shackleton, which will leave for New Zealand about October next, will take out with it an Arrol-Johnston rncitor vehicle, and this will undergo special preparation to fit it for service on the ice.

The annual dinner of the A.C.G.B. and I will be held at the Hotel Cecil on Friday the 8th proximo: the annual general meeting is to be held the same afternoon,at 5 o'clock, at the Club. This date, it will be observed, is immediately after the opening day of the Olympia Show.

Arrangements are, now, in hand for the augmentation of the funds at the disposal of the Committee, guarantees of some £7,000 being required if six miles of road are to be made. The Motor Union, upon the suggestion of Sir J. H. A. Macdonald, K.C.B., has decided to award two prizes, of 5s. and 4:2 2s., for the best essays on the subject of " Motor legislation : preparation for the forthcoming Parlia mentary struggle." Mr. A. Gordon Smith, a director of S. Smith and Son, Limited, of 9, Strand, London, W.C., who has recently returned from a trip to the United States, has obtained contract orders amounting to over L;40,000 sterling for his company's speed indicator, notwithstanding the imposition of a 45 per cent, import duty. He has, also, negotiated large business in Canada.

The Main Roads and Bridges Committee of the Lancashire County Council continues its enlightened policy Of strengthening the main roads of that county, The Deputy-chairman of this Committee, Mr. J. Shuttleworth, at its last meeting, remarked that, as an industrial county with foreign competitors, Lancashire must take advantage of any improvement in road transit

A Burglary.

A little mild excitement was caused to members of the staff of Tangent Whoels, Limited, when they arrived at the works, in Grove Road, Balloon, last Saturday morning. The office doors were found broken open ; the desks had been, internally, inspected. and there was, on the floor, a litter of tools, which, evidently, had been used on the safe, though, fortunately, without success. It was thought, at first, that the Tangent wheels had escaped without loss, but it was, subsequently. discovered that about 2411b. of new rubber blocks, and old rubber tires, had disappeared, and for these the police are now looking. Fodens, Limited, of Elworth Works, Sandhach, has received a further order for four of its standard 5-ton steam

De Dion-Bouton, Limited, of to, Great Marlborough Street, W., has brought out a compact, electric, speed indicator. The indicator consists of a dead-beat voltmeter, with a dial graduated in miles per hour, the current being supplied from a small dynamo, whose armature is rotated by a rubber band, which passes over an aluminium pulley fixed to the spokes of the front wheel. The armature is of soft iron; there are no brushes or commutators.

The question of a united ambulance service for London was discussed at the conference of delegates from Metropolitan Boards of Guardians, and other Authorities, which, washeld in the Hall of Gray's Inn, last Saturday afternoon. This was preceded by a parade of ambulance wagons from all parts of the City, in Gray's Inn Square. Self-propelted ambulances were represented by the 2oh.p., omnibus-type, motor vehicle built by Dennis Brothers, Limited, of Guildford, and by the vehicle built by the Electromobile Company, Limited. The former is capable Of carrying two recumbent patients, one on each side, or eight patients silting up. It was purchased, in rock, by the Metropolitan Asylums Board, at a cost of ,4:740. Between the tst of October, too6, and the 3oth of January, 19o7, this motor ambulance ran _1,5o8 miles and conveyed 721 patients and attendants. The latter, constructed for the Corporation of the City of London, has not, yet, we understand, entered into active service; it created, however, a very favourable impression amongst the delegates. Speed in reaching cases of street accident is the main recommendation of the motor ambulance wagon.
