• British industry threw its hand in with the environmentalists this week when the CBI urged the Government to spend £2bn more a year to shift freight off the roads.
The CBI believes this is the extra amount the Government should spend, predominantly on rail and railheads, ships and ports, "to encourage a switch away from cars and lorries".
Although it wants spending on road building and maintenance to increase, it calls for
tighter enforcement of parking regulations, vehicle safety and emission standards.
And in a direct threat to the road haulage industry, the CBI urges the Government to reform transport taxes and pricing to help shift the balance to rail and water transport.
"The tensions between economic growth, transport growth, congestion and environmental quality threaten to strangle UK competitiveness," says the CBI.
