Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

As usual, the machines exhibited by this company made a, brave ghow, and one on which the compaity received many congratulations. They were a standard • five ton Garrett tractor, a five ton steam wagon on rubber tyres, and two fine threshing machines,

The tractor has a two-eylindered compound engine mounted in the usual manner at the top of the boiler, and .fitted with a governor for driving stationary machinery by belt.

The steam Wagon can also draw three tons on a separate trailer. Its boiler is of the loco type with Garrett patent corrugated firebox plates riveted by hydraulic pressure, arid solid drawn steel tubes. The overtype engine is of the horizontal compound design. The final drive is by roller chain.

Samson.

The sole distribntors for the Samson tractor in Kent, Surrey, and Sussex are Henry S. Tettand Co., Ltd., of Faversham and Sittingbourne, who had on view the 25.6 h.p. model.

The engine is four-cylindered, with the cylinders cast en bloc, having a bore and stroke of 4 ins. and 5 ins. respec. tively ; the cylinder head is detachable. The induction pipe is enclosed in the exhaust manifold, thus ensuring complete vaporization of the paraffin which is used as fuel. The clutch is a the multiple-disc type, and it conveys the drive to a two-speed-and-reverse gearbox.

The weight of the-machine is 2,950 lb., and it sells at the reasonable price of £330. .

Martin.

The Martin general-purpose motor tractor, which was shown by Martin's Cultivator Co., Ltd., is of the fourwheeled type. It is modelled on 'welt' established road engine practice. The engine, which is of substantial build, is of Dorman manufacture, and is fitted with a paraffin vaporizer. It is three-point suspended in the frame. A governor M the centrifugal type is fitted, and the governed speed can be varied between 500 and 1,200 r.p.m. The clutch is of the cone type and is Ferod,olined, whilst the gearbox provides three

speeds forward and a reverse. Final drive is by substantial spur gearing from the gearbox shaft through the differential shaft to pinions engaging with in ternal gearwheels secured to the road wheel runs.

The makers claim that the tractor will pull's three or four furrow plough 'under all ordinary conditions on the land, whilst on the road it will haul a load of six tons over give-and-take roads.

International Harvester,

The International Harvester Co. of Great Britain had on view two tractors, one being a. Titan and the other the wellknown International Junior.

The International Junior has a cylinder overhead,overhead valve engine with a bore of 4 ins, and a stroke of 5 ins., the normal speed being 1,000 r.p.rn. and the R.A.C. rating 25.6 h.p. A notable feature in the engine construction is that the cylinders have renewable sleeves. The gearbox, provides three speeds forward and a reverse.

The most interesting features Meor. porated in the 10-20 h.p. Titan tractor are the engine, which is a horizontal, two-cylinder, side-by-side type, and the feet that no radiator is fitted, the cooling water being kept in a tank situated on the frame at the front end,

McLaren, •

Amongst the machines shown by this well-known company, the most interesting to readers of this lournal were a stationary ploughing engine for a cable ploughing outfit and a five ton compound steam tractor.

The ploughing engine is provided with a Darman power unit developing 40 h.p. an petrol and 32 h.p. on paraffin; incidentally, it runs normally on the latter fuel. A belt drive is incorporated, and the machine, apart from ploughing, can be Used for ordinary haulage work.

. Maskell Junior.

The Semaphore Engineering Co., Ltd., of Advance 'Works, Jew's Road, London, S.W., manufacturers of the Maskell Junior motor plough, had one of these new and interesting little machines on view. The engine is a V twin Bleckburne of 10 h.p., the drive to the multiple disc clutch being by means of a chain, and from the clutch to the single driving wheel by gears. The overall length of the machine is 12 ft., its width being 4 ft. 3 ins., and its weight 10 cwt.. This tractor has been evolved to meet the need for a really serviceable and handy single-furrow motor plough, and is said to be capable of ploughing a. furrow 6 ins.-9 ins, deep by 9 ins.-12 ins. wide. Once the idler wheel has been put into the furrow the tractor is self-steering. It sells at £175.

Glasgow.

The Glasgow tractor, which is made at Cardonald, Scotland, was exhibited by the British Motor Trading Corporation, Ltd.

This machine is of medium weight, and drives on all three wheels. It -has a four-cylindered engine, developing 25 b.h.p., with a bore of 4/4. ina, and a stroke of 5k ins. The clutch is of the ordinary cone type. Two forward speeds are provided by the transmission (the high speed being 5 m.p.h., and the low speed 2-ly m.p.h.) and a reverse, which gives 21 m.p.h. The wheelbase of the machine is 6 ft. 3 ins., its overall width is 5 ft., and the overall length 11 ft. The weight of the machine complete with spuds, weler, and fuel is 4,256 lb.

The Glasgow farm tractor excels in the .matter of wheel grip, owing to its positive drive on all three wheels,

Garner.

The Garner four-wheeled tractor was exhibited by Henry Garner, Ltd., of Birmingham, together with a petrol lorry. The engine of the tractor is of the four-cylinder type with the cylinders cast en bloc; it has a bore of 4i ins. and a stroke of 5i ins., the R.A.C. rating being 29 h.p. A governor of the centrifugal type is fitted, and the speeds can be varied from about 800 to 1,100 engin. The clutch is of the dry disc type, and the gearbox provides three speeds forward and a reverse.

A small frame is fitted to the engine hearers and carried round the front, form. ing a central pivot for the front axle and transverse springing. The fined drive is by a steel worm meshing with a phrephar-bronze worm wheel, which is secured to the differential casing, tha axle being of the familiar full-floating type.

When fitted with ordinary land spuds, this tractor sells at £385; when fitted with detachable rubber tyres, which are in four sections, the price is £410.

Aveling and Porter.

This company are chiefly known to most people by the steam rollers with which their name is 6ssociated, but, in addition to these useful machines, they have established quite a. reputation for their steam tractors, of which two were exhibited at, the Show, both five-toriners, one fitted with rubber tyres and with piston valve gear, and the other wi.:1 steel tyres and the ordinary type of slide valve gear.

Overtime.

The 'power .Unit incorporated in the Overtime tractor is of the two-cylinder side-by-side type, with. overhead valves and up-and-down cranks, which give rather better balance than is the case.

when the cracks are together. The clutch, of the contracting band type, is situated inside a large flywheel, and the power is conveyed to a two-speed-andreverse gearbox of the ordinary sliding gear type. The differential, which is

driveinby spur-gearing, is enclosed within an extension of the gearbox ,casting, and the finaledrive is by spur gears meshing with internal toothed rings on the rear wheels. This tractor was shown by the Associated Manufacturers Co.

Foster

The most. interesting exhibits on the eta,hd occupied by this company, so far' as we were concerned, were a five ion steam wagon on-rubber tyres and a five ton steam tractor.' •

The wagon was one of the company's Well-known starelaird productions embodying a loco type boiler and overtype engine. The latter has two cylinders for high and low pressure. Acentrally pivoted front axle and traction engine steering are employed. The tractor is of the same type as the wagon, and the Chief point about it is the really welldesigned springing.

Twin City.

Fairbanks, Morse and Co., Ltd., who are agents for the Twin Cityetracter, had on view a 12-20 h.p. model made by the American concern.

A four-cylindered engine is used in this tractor, with the cylinders wet en bloc and having a bore and stroke of

4,1 ins. and 6 ins. respectively: The clutch is of the single-disc dry-plate type and it conveys the drive to a gearbox giving two speed.a forward and a re, verse.

The wheelbase of the tractor is 7 ft., and its weight, without fuel; water, or lags, is 4,200 lb.

Foden.

The only exhibit on this stand, but one which vas well worth a visit, was a five ton rubber-tyred steam :wagon of the -company's standard type, and similar to that which was staged at the CoMmercial -Vehicle Show at Olympia. The boiler is of the loco type, with smoke tubes running the full length of the Unreel. Upon this is mounted a compound two-cylinder engine working at a pressure of 20(3 :u. to the square inch.

e28 It is provided with high-pressure gear whereby, for special occasions, both cylinders can be utilized with high, pressure steam. The front axle is centrally pivoted, and the rear axle isof the traction engine typo.

Burrell.

The two machines eyhibited by this company were a 6 h.p. road locomotive and a five ton tractor on rubber tyres. The fanner is provided with eprings-both

at the front and rear. 'rile gearing allows for three speeds, and, an exteit water tank is fitted for • long-distance work. A locking device for the differentialis operated by a lever in the driver's cab. The tractor is one of the well-known showman's type, and has a most elaborate. appearance. It is fitted with an injector and geared pump..

Allchin.

This old-established company exhibited one of their standard four ton steam 'wagons on rubber tyres. This machine is of the well-known overtype with loco boiler, and has a compound engine provided with a double high-pressure valve which enables high-pressure steam to be admitted to the DAV -preag"U-213 cylinder when extra power is required. The valve gearing is of the ordinary sliding type.

Thepatented double-pin 'drive and foot brake arrangement to therear wheels overcomes the necessity of keying the near side wheel to the axle, and also provides a speedy method of wheel removal.

RansoMes.

This well-known company staged a fine series of exhibits, including one of their compound steam .tractors with two speeds, winding drum and wire rope, water lace and hose, feed pump and injector: This machine is one of the standard productions ef the company, and incorporates all the most recent improvements. The engine is of the evertype, suppeeted on a loco type boiler, the first motion wheels have machinecut teeth, and the gearing is protected by suitable guards and areanged to give road speeds of 3 and 5-m.p.h. There were also a 6 h.p. compound traction engine designed for threshing and other farm work, and a five ten steam wagon on rubber tyres. The engine of the wagon is of the compound type.

Two fine machines were shown by this company, one a five ton compound steam tractor, and the other a7 h.p. traction engine, spring mounted and provided with a winding drum.

The compound tractor is 'of the overtype, with a boiler constructed to work at a pressure of 200 lb: per square inch. The high and low pressure cylinders are combined in one casting, -the nsualetype of D slide valves being employed. The Marshall firebox had a patent cambered top, for which special advantages, including maximum accessibility, economy in fuel consumption, and less formation of scale, are claimeCle

Service.

A little tractor which is particularly suitable for use between rows of growing cropsis the Service, winch was shown by the manufacturers, Price, Service and Co., of 7, Old Bailey, London, E.C. It incorporates an . engine with a single cylinder which develops about 4 h.p. at the belt, its drawbar h.p. being rated

at The power is ample for drawing a single furrow plough. The engine is water-cooled. The machine measures only 17 ins, across its widest part, and is only 39 ins. in height, which enables it to be used beneath branches of low growing trees, shrubs, and vines. The weight of the machine is 500 lb.

Wallis and Steevens. • .

Th,e exhibits shown by this company comprised a. rubberetyred, heavy type, fiveiton compound tractor -and a 7 h.p. traction engine with patent expansion gear.

The tractor is a standard loco-type with overty-pe engine, throe shaft gear, and loco boiler. 'rho distinguishing feature is undoubtedly the engine, and., in particular, the method of lubricating that unit.

Austin.

The Austin tractor is a favourite with farmers., and it attracted considerable attention on Stand No. 23, where it was shown by the Austin Motor Co., Ltd., of Birmingham.

'The general lines of construction of this machine are now well known, but to refresh the memories of some of our readers, we might mention that it is fitted with an engine of 3a in. bore and 5 in. stroke. The well-known Austin clutch with pressed steel male mernber and Ferodo lining in segments is embcd:ed. The gearbox gives two forward speeds and a reverse. The Austin is a lightweight tractor, and its design is straightforward and substantial.

• Tasker.

• Considerable interest was shown in the productions staged by this company. Illey comprised a Little Giant five ton spring-mounted chain-driven tractor, a five tou B2 type compound tractor, and a steel-tyred trailer. Both tractors have kco bailees with overtype engines. Two gears are proSided, all the gearing being

totally enclosed. The springing is of particular interest.

G.O.

An example of the G.O. tractor was staged by Messrs. Noyes, Stockwell and Co.. So far as our knowledge goes, we b.elieve that this is the only tractor in which a friction gear is incorporated. The machine is fitted with a 14-28 h.p. Waukesha four-cylindered engine of 41 ins. bore and 5 ins, stroke, running at, a speed of 900 r.p.m. Cooling water circulation .' is by pump. The change-speed gearing • consists of a fibre-faced friction wheel of large diameter driven by the crankshaft and running between two heavy, • large diameter steel discs.

The draw-bar pull of the G.O. tractor is 2,250 lb.

. Fowler.

A moot, comprehensive Series of exhibits was staged by this company. It consisted of a five ton Tiger steam tractor fitted with patent dust-proof spring gear a high-pressure, super-heated stcam-ploughing engine for use with Use cable system of ploughing; an internalcombustion ploughing engine with patent compound Penland road wheels, also for use with table-drawn ploughs; a Fowler motor plough, which is of the self-contained, type, and can be adapted for cultivating, harrowing, hauling mowers and binders, and for belt driving; and the Fowler anti-balance English plough. •

New Britain.

On the stand of Markt and Co. (Lon. don), Ltd., the New Britain cultivating tractors were tse be seen. These little machines are made by the New Britain Machine Co., of America.

The power unit consists of a two-cylinder, vertical, four-cycle, water-cooled motor, 2i ins, bore by 4 ins. stroke, with the cylinders cast en bloc. One speed forward only is provided, and the transmission from engine to wheels is on the planetary system.

In the smaller, or No. 1 model,' the driving wheels are 24 ins. diameter, and are arranged as close as possible to the sides of the engine bonnets resulting in the production of a machine which is only 19 ins. wide.

In the No. 2 machine the wheels are 32 ins, in diameter, and are adjustable from 28 ins. to 33.ins. apart, so that they can be adjusted for straddling rows of different widths.

Ruston and Hornsby.

On this stand were found a 7 h.p. traction engine and an example of the British Wallis tractor. The former follows usual traction engine practice, having a loco type boiler and an overtype enzine. The agricultural tractor is of particular interest, as it put up such a fine performance at the 1920 R.A.S.E. Trac-tor Trials. The chief peculiarity about the machine lies in the frame.

Hart-Parr.

The Hart-Parr 30 was shown by the coneessionnaires for the United Kingdom., Messrs. Coenraad de Waal, of 2, Great Winchester Street, London E.C. The engine of this tractor is of the twocylinclered horizontal type, with overhead valves, the bore and stroke being ins. and 7 ins. respectively, the normal speed being 750 r.p.m. Two speeds forward are provided by the gearbox-.

The Hart-Parr tractor, is capable of pulling a four-furrow plough, and it sells at £545. It'weighs 6,570 lb. • .

Peterbro.

The Peterbre tractor was exhibited for the first, time at the Darlington Show earlier in the year, and many farmers who missed seeing it on that occasion had an opportunity of inspecting it at the Smithfield Show.

The engine-is of the four-cylinder type, developing its full power oi 60-35 h.p. at 1,000 r.p.m. It has a bore of q ins. and a stroke of 4 ins. and is made ureter the Ricardo patents.ile-c'utch is of the cone type, Perak-lined, whilst the gearbox is of neat design.

Clayton

Clayton productions always excite a considerable amount of interest, and the exhibits staged on their stand on this occasion made no exception to this rule. They consisted of a five ton steam wagon fitted with rubber tyres; a five ton compound steam tractor with steel tyres; and a. 6 h.p. compound traction engine. • Perhaps the most pleasing of these exhibits was the new overtype wagon, in which the driver and his mate are .much better protected than on the old model. The compound steam tractor and the compound engine follow the usual Clay

ton practice.

Saunderson.

The Saunderson Universal Model CI tractor is one of the best known of British farm machines, and it was shown by the Saunderson Tractor and Implement Co., Ltd., ofBedford.

The power unit is a two-cylinder vertical engine specially designed to run on paraffin. The clutch is a leather-lined cone, and the drive thence is tranamitted to the gearbox by a first reduction of plain spur wheels. Final transmission is by spurs to sturdy bevel differential gear on the rear axle. The drawbar pull of the Saundersou is 3,000 lb.

Case.

The J. I. Case Threshing Machine Co. had on view in the Gilbey Hall two models of the well-known Case tractor, these being the 10-18 h.p., which is designed to haul. a two or three furrow plough, and the 15-27 h.p. tractor, which is designed for Use with a three or four furrow plough. The two tractors are very similar in design, except that the engine of the 15-27 hp. model has small differences in detail commensurate with the greater power._ The engine of the 10-18 -11.p. machine has four vertical cylinders, 3,7s in. bore and 5 in. stroke, whilst on the larger machine the dimensions are 4 in. bore and 5 in, stroke.'

Emerson.

An. Emerson tractor, which is made by Emerson, Brantingharn, of Rockford, U.S.A., was shown by Melchior, Armstrong and Dessau (London), Ltd.

This tractor incorporates a four-cylindered engine which runs on paraffin after having been started on petrol; 'it. has a bore and stroke of 4 ins. and 5 ins, respectively, developing 26.3 h.p. i

at 900 r.p.m. The clutch s of the cone type, and the drive thence is taken to a two-speed-and-reverse gearbox. A feature of the Emerson design is the simplicity of the frame construction.

Robey.

Special claims regarding lightness are made for tie Robey steam wagon, and One of these machines on rubber tyres and the latest design five ton tractor were shown by the company.

The wagon probably represents the most advanced ideas in overtype-steamwagon construction.

Apart from the exhibitors of meeba. niml vehicles, there was also a number of exhibitors of accessories and medries. C29
