BRITISH Rail is ready to fight for more freight business — that is the message from BR chairman Peter Parker, and he has no doubt that BR Freight will succeed.

He told CM last week: "We want to take the heat out of the road against rail argument. Railways are a major solution to major modern problems," he said.

"Rail freight is alive and BR wishes to give the best possible service at a reasonable price — even against ferocious competition — and don't forget BR is actively engaged in the movement of large amounts of garbage," said Mr Parker.
