Brian Chalmers-Hunt looks at equipment available for municipal and public works operators

THE NEC will house one of the biggest collections of commercial vehicles and equipment ever collected under one roof. Nevertheless, some municipal and public works operators may feel the need to follow up their visit with another to Birmingham in November, when the Public Works Exhibition is held, in order to see more equipment on the market.

The Ministry and Special Products Division of Fodens in conjunction with Atkinsons of Clitheroe are exhibiting a new 6x4 gritter/snowplough specially developed for the Department of Transport using the concept of maximum interchangeability of major components with the standard cornmercial range of vehicles.

The hydraulic fully automatic road gritting equipment is powered by a hydraulic pump drive off the front of the Rolls-Royce 265 Mk111 engine crankshaft while the belt conveyor and single spinner are driven by independent hydraulic motors.

Driving cab control ensures infinitely variable spread width and density of spread and is related to road speed by a monitoring valve which is controlled by the speed of the vehicle's propeller shaft. Hopper capacity is 9 cubic metres, (321.3 cubic feet) and is avail-. able in steel or steel lined with fibreglass.
