"Le Club" gets new AP

An order worth E2m a year has been won by Automotive Products for brake systems and clutches for "Le Club" the Volvo, Saviem, DAF and KHD (Magirus) consortium. Bulk of the order is for an entirely new design of air over hydraulic braking system incorporating spring actuators, in an application for vehicles up to 14 tonnes gvw.

Haulage "lump" dangers

The road haulage ;lump" the trend towards self-employed drivers following the building trade practice was highlighted in the Commons by Mr Leslie Huckfield, MP, on Tuesday. Mr Huckfield said that one man Lance Secretan has made himself, through the Manpower agency, the nationwide expert on lorry driving employment and how to get jobs. and was openly encouraging the spread of agency drivers. And the ready-mixed concrete people, in a deliberate attempt to shovel off some of their tax responsibilities, had told their drivers to turn themselves into owner-drivers. Because of agency men and "lump" drivers, income tax, NHI and drivers' hours enforcement would be at risk.

Peyton defends 10 tons

At the first London meeting of the European Parliament's regional policy and transport committee on Tuesday, Mr John Peyton rejected suggestions by a former Belgian transport minister that he was being intransigent in opposing an increase in axle weights. Not only Britain but Ireland, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Italy, most of Eastern Europe and the USA opposed axle weights above 10 metric tons. They could not all be badly advised: and he had found most European transport ministers agreed with him in keeping "juggernaut" lorries within strict bounds.

Joint tanker depot

A new six-acre depot with facilities for 150 road tankers was opened in Widnes, Lanes, this week to service Harold Wood and Sons Ltd and Pickfords Ltd jointly. Both are subsidiaries of the NFC's Tankfreight company. A workshop with 23 fitters will provide 24hour service for vehicles of both fleets, but the two companies will continue to operate separately

Pre-tax profit of Fodens Ltd in 1972-3 was C 1 , 144, 000 compared with £641,099 in the previous year.

Right-hand ban

Vehicles over 3 tons unladen are prohibited from using the right-hand lane on three lengths of M5 in Worcestershire from today, when the Motorways Traffic (Lengths of the M5 (Restriction of Overtaking) Regulations 1973, SI 1021, come into effect.
