Centralized Garage for Salford.

On the proposition of Councillor Geo. Fernehough (one of the pioneers of big-scale coach services) Salford City Council has decided to establish a central garage for all the motor vehicles owned by the corporation (excluding police and fire-brigade vehicles). He submitted that economy would be effected besides giving better service.

Increase in Lambeth Bridge Traffic.

The London County Council has prepared statistics to indicate the rapidly increasing use of Lambeth Bridge by all classes of vehicle. An enumeration was made on June 15, and this disclosed an increase in traffic for the year of 14.7 per cent.

n22 The report states that the total increase in motor and horsed vehicles since soon after the opening is from nearly 5,500 to over 8,300, or over 52 per cent.. in a period of 20 months. The latest enumeration was made before the closing of Waterloo Bridge. The initial traffic carried by the new Lambeth Bridge reached the council's expectations and the increase so far has been more than could have been anticipated.

Stockton's £ 1 ,24 3 Loss.

A report submitted to Stockton Town Council stated that for the year ended March 31 last the buses and trams showed a deficiency of 21,243. The reserve fund for the trams stood at 26,966 and for the buses at 23,527. Belfast's Busy Ambulance Fleet.

The annual report of the ambulance section of the Belfast Fire Brigade for the year ended March 31, 1934, states that the fleet of four ambulances answered 3,600 calls, occupying 2,231 hours. The distance travelled was 16,691 miles and the average number of miles per case was 41.

Sale of Gas for Motor Vehicles.

At a recent meeting of Chesterfield Corporation's gas committee, the town clerk reported upon the negotiations with the Chesterfield Tube Co., Ltd., in connection with the agreement covering the sale of compressed gas for motor vehicles. The agreement" is to operate for five years. HAULIERS AND MUNICIPAL CONTRACTS.

The method adopted by Lanes County Council in inviting and placing contracts for haulage, was referred to at a conference of hauliers at Manchester. It was asked whether pressure could be brought to bear on the council to prevent the acceptance of tenders from outside the territory.

It was explained that it was now compulsory for councils to accept the lowest tender, irrespective of the person or firm concerned. There were now ample safeguards to ensure fair wages and conditions for employees.

Speed-limit Powers Too Wide.

The County Councils Association has passed the following resolution :— "That it is not aware of any justification for the proposal to make so substantial an extension of the classes of local authority possessing functions with regard to speed limits as is contained in the Road Traffic Bill, and considers it desirable, in the interests of uniformity and administrative convenience, that directions whether a road is or is not to be deemed within a built-up area should be given only by the county and county borough councils, and by the councils of those non-county boroughs which are police authorities."
